Pool Service in Alief, TX

Alief lies about 6 miles north of Lanterra's Sugar Land office. It began as a flat, flood-prone prairie settlement called Dairy, grew fast through the 1970s and 1980s, and is now a patchwork of civic associations from Glenshannon to Crown Colony, with the gated Royal Oaks Country Club on the grounds of the old Andrau Airpark.

From Dairy to Super Neighborhood 25

Alief is a community, not a city. Houston began annexing it in 1977, and some pockets are still unincorporated Harris County. The city recognizes the area as Super Neighborhood 25, roughly bounded by the Westpark Tollway, the Sam Houston Tollway, the Fort Bend County line and State Highway 6. Fourteen civic groups belong to it, including the Leawood and Leawood West associations, Keegan's Glen, Glenshannon, Parkglen, Crown Colony and Crown Colony West, Brays Village and Brays Forest.

Those same boundaries are how we reach it. From our office, State Highway 6 runs north to Alief's western edge, and Beltway 8 forms its eastern side, so most streets here are a short drive.

The city line matters more for a pool owner than most people expect. It can change who supplies your water and, for an association or apartment pool, which health department issues the permit.

Boom-era backyards and a younger enclave

Between 1980 and 1985, Alief took in about one-sixth of all the growth in Harris County, and its population rose another 45 percent from 1990 to 2005. Plenty of backyard pools could date from that run, though many homes have had pools added or redone since, so we check each one rather than assuming its age. Plaster that has been through many Houston summers can turn rough and blotchy, and an older pad may already be on a replacement pump.

When a surface has stains that brushing and chemistry will not lift, an acid wash is often the next step. When the motor hums but will not start or the filter pressure keeps climbing, we find the cause first and explain it before quoting a repair.

Royal Oaks Country Club is younger. It was built after Andrau Airpark closed in December 1998, southeast of Richmond Avenue and West Houston Center Boulevard, and it was the first country club inside Houston city limits in 50 years. Pools there have had less time to age, so the focus tends to be steady weekly service and keeping equipment in good order rather than catching up on years of wear.

Flat ground and slow drainage

There is little slope anywhere in Alief, and the Beaumont Formation clay underneath it drains slowly. Floods in 1899 and the 1900 Galveston Hurricane wiped out the early settlement's church and crops. Today Arthur Storey Park, 175 acres on the West Sam Houston Parkway, doubles as a detention basin holding about 1.15 billion gallons of stormwater for Brays Bayou, which winds through Alief on its way east.

When a summer downpour sits on the lawn, the pool collects grass, mulch and soil, and the extra rainwater thins out sanitizer and stabilizer at the same moment the heat is feeding algae. Add a few missed days and the water can go cloudy, then green. In long dry spells the same clay shrinks, so watch the joint between deck and coping for gaps.

Which side of the city line you are on

Annexed parts of Alief draw from Houston's Main System: mostly treated lake water, disinfected with chloramine. Houston's 2025 report recorded hardness from 43.5 to 229 mg/L and gives no figure specific to Alief, so we measure calcium in your pool instead of leaning on a citywide figure. In an unincorporated pocket your supplier may be different, and its own annual water quality report will say.

Permits for shared pools split along the same line. Within city limits, apartment and condo pools fall under the Houston Health Department's commercial pool permits. Outside it, Harris County Public Health requires a separate permit for each pool and each spa on a regulated property, good for one year.

Local Questions

Pool service in Alief: FAQ

Most of it is. Houston began annexing Alief in 1977, but some pockets are still unincorporated Harris County. Lanterra works in both; what changes is your water supplier and, for shared pools, the permitting agency.
Yes. It is a gated community, so share gate or access instructions when you set up service and your technician will use them on each visit.
Pull out the big debris with a skimmer net, keep the pump running if the equipment stayed dry, and hold off on adding chemicals until the water has been tested. A diluted pool usually needs chlorine and stabilizer rebuilt, not a drain. Call (832) 471-7596 if it turns green.
