Pool Service in Sugar Land, TX

Sugar Land is home base for Lanterra Pools. The city spans First Colony backyards from the late 1970s through the 1990s, Telfair and Imperial pools from 2005 on, and Greatwood and New Territory homes on their own city groundwater systems. Every route we run, from routine visits to repair calls, begins at our office in town.

Four water systems, four sets of numbers

Sugar Land does not run one water system. It runs four, and they are not connected. The Main System, east of the Brazos, blends water from 14 city wells with surface water drawn from the Brazos River and Oyster Creek, the same creek you cross on the bridge at Oyster Creek Park, and treats the surface supply at the city's membrane plant. River Park, Greatwood and New Territory rely on wells alone.

The city's published hardness ranges show why that matters at the pool. The Main System has ranged from about 35 to 280 ppm, Greatwood from 34 to 164, New Territory from 50 to 186 and River Park from 109 to 155, and readings shift from well to well. Summer evaporation then concentrates whatever minerals the top-off water brings. A reading from the house down the street, or a citywide average, tells you little about your own water.

Salt chlorinator manuals commonly set a calcium hardness target of 200 to 400 ppm. Fill water at the soft end of Sugar Land's ranges can start below that, while water at the hard end, concentrated through a hot summer, drifts toward scale. A salt water pool system is the first place scale shows up, and a cell crusted with calcium can report salt lower than it really is.

From Sugar Creek to Imperial: nearly sixty years of backyards

Sugar Land grew as a chain of master-planned communities. Sugar Creek, begun in 1968, is described as the first. First Colony started in 1976 and was finished in 1997, about 9,700 acres and roughly 98 neighborhoods across the south side of town. Greatwood and New Territory both date from 1989 and were annexed into the city in December 2017. Telfair broke ground in 2005 on former state prison farm land, and Imperial took shape in the 2010s on the old sugar refinery property that now includes Constellation Field.

A pool from the Sugar Creek or early First Colony years that still has its original finish may be ready for new plaster, tile or coping. Newer Telfair and Imperial pools are more likely to have been built with a variable-speed pump and an automation panel. Pumps manufactured since July 2021 must meet federal efficiency standards that, for most in-ground filter pumps, effectively require variable speed. The rule does not force out a working pump, but when an old single-speed unit finally quits, its replacement will most likely be variable-speed.

Clay that moves and a river that rises

Lake Charles clay, an expansive soil whose type location is in Fort Bend County, can open surface cracks up to about two inches wide in dry weather. The soil under any one lot varies, and the city is estimated to be subsiding 10 to 25 millimeters a year. A long dry spell followed by heavy rain can shift decks, coping and buried plumbing, so new coping cracks, a widening deck joint or unexplained water loss are worth catching early.

The Brazos, which runs past Sugar Land Memorial Park and Brazos River Park, is the other force here. Upstream at the Richmond gauge it reached 54.74 feet in June 2016, then topped that with 55.19 feet on September 1, 2017, the highest crest recorded there. During Harvey, parts of Sugar Land were under mandatory evacuation, and levee improvement districts closed their outfalls and pumped rainfall out from inside the levees. When a storm leaves your pool full of leaves, silt and runoff, storm cleanup starts with getting the leaves and silt out, then a filter clean, a fresh balance and a close look at the equipment pad for water damage.

Lakes, fairways and a full skimmer basket

Many Sugar Land communities feature golf courses, country clubs and lakes, and the older ones have had decades for their landscaping to fill in. That means leaves, clippings and pollen in the skimmer. With weekly pool service, one technician visits on a fixed weekday to skim, brush, empty the baskets, test and balance the water, and look over the equipment. Cartridge and sand filter manuals typically say to clean or backwash when the gauge reads roughly 8 to 10 psi over what it showed fresh, and in leaf season that point can arrive quickly, which is where a filter cleaning comes in.

Getting around town from the office

Sugar Land is centered on the junction of SH-6 and I-69, a short drive from our office. US-90A runs through the older north side, and SH-99, the Grand Parkway, serves the west side toward Greatwood and Telfair. River Park sits west of the Brazos, and New Territory has the river along part of its southern edge.

Local Questions

Pool service in Sugar Land: FAQ

You may be on different water. The city runs four unconnected systems: the Main System blends groundwater with treated Brazos and Oyster Creek water, while River Park, Greatwood and New Territory use groundwater only. Published hardness ranges differ between them and from well to well, so the right chemical dose for your pool comes from testing your pool.
Yes. Greatwood and New Territory became part of Sugar Land in December 2017, and River Park is on the west side of the Brazos. All three are in our service area, and each is served by its own city groundwater system.
Not automatically. A working pump can stay. If it is failing, we diagnose the actual cause before quoting, then tell you whether a pump repair or a replacement is the better spend for your pool.
